The two Monroe businesses, the Crystal Spa, at 500 Monroe Turnpike and the Blue Rose Spa at 115 Main St., were closed on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

According to Lt. Stephen Corrone of the Monroe Police, after receiving the complaints, the department contacted the state Department of Labor regarding the unnamed activity.

On Tuesday, Monore Police and the Department of Labor officials conducted unannounced compliance inspections of both businesses, Corrone said.

"Inspections were performed in an effort to determine compliance with state labor laws," Corrone said.

During the inspection, both establishments were found to be non-compliant and were immediately shut down by the Department of Labor until further notice.

Each business also faces additional administrative sanctions, officials said.

The police department did not say if the businesses would be able to reopen.
